Santa Cruz Shakespeare (SCS) today announced its expansion in year-round programming with a special spring engagement of Vincent, the acclaimed one-person play by Leonard Nimoy. The 90-minute performance, starring SCS Artistic Director Charles Pasternak, will take place at the Veterans Memorial Building, 846 Front Street in Downtown Santa Cruz on select dates from April 24 through May 10, 2026. Tickets for Vincent are on sale Friday, January 9 at 9 a.m.

Vincent is a compelling theatrical portrait of Vincent van Gogh, drawn from a series of imagined letters between the artist and his brother Theo that illuminate the van Gogh’s creative drive, personal struggles and enduring legacy. In this intimate production, Pasternak delivers a singular performance that brings depth and humanity to one of history’s most influential artists.

Specific performance dates and ticketing details are posted at www.santacruzshakespeare.org. Information is also available at www.ticketleap.events/tickets/santa-cruz-shakespeare/vincent or by calling the SCS box office at 831-460-6399, open Tuesday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The production of Vincent is part of Santa Cruz Shakespeare’s expansion into year-round programming, reflecting the organization’s commitment to broadening its artistic offerings beyond the traditional summer and fall festival season. By presenting works such as Vincent in alternative venues and at different times of year, Santa Cruz Shakespeare continues to deepen its engagement with the community and expand access to live, professional theatre.

“Vincent represents both an artistic opportunity and an important step forward for Santa Cruz Shakespeare,” said Pasternak. “As we move toward year-round programming, we are excited to present work that invites reflection, intimacy and connection.”

Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, SCS now brings live, professional touring productions—including A Midsummer Night’s Dream and our bilingual Romeo and Juliet —directly into classrooms across Santa Cruz County and the entire Bay Area.

We eliminate every barrier of cost and access so that every student can experience the power of world-class theatre.

Last year, we reached 8,000 students. With your help, we can double that number!

For many children, an SCS school show is the first live theatre experience of their lives. They stay for post-show discussions, receive curriculum-aligned teacher packets, and discover the joy, empathy, and imagination that Shakespeare still sparks today.

August 27, 2025 – SANTA CRUZ, CA—Santa Cruz Shakespeare (SCS), a nationally recognized professional theatre company in Santa Cruz County with deep local roots that go back more than 40 years, today announced its production “Master Harold”… and the boys by Athol Fugard opens on Sept. 5 at 8 p.m.

Directed by Rebecca Haley Clark, the production will run through Sept. 20 under the trees and stars in the Audrey Stanley Grove at Santa Cruz’s DeLaveaga Park. Tickets prices range from $20 to $75 and are available at santacruzshakespeare.org. The seasonal box office is open for phone orders Tuesday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 831-460-6399 and two hours prior to every performance.

Following the epic sweep of its 2025 summer productions with the theme “No One is Alone”, SCS’s fall production of “Master Harold” snaps us into the deeply intimate and intense apartheid era of South Africa. The production stars Corey Jones as Sam, Nick Rossi as Hally and Elliot Sagay as Willy.

About the production: Young Hally, who is white, spends the afternoon after school in his family’s tea shop with two of the family’s servants, Sam and Willy, who are black. Over the course of 90 minutes, we bear witness to the shifting relationship between all of them: a relationship built both on love and respect, as well as one built on bigotry and institutionalized racism. Fugard’s autobiographical masterpiece is both joyous and brutal, with an ending that will leave you both stunned and inspired. It brings home the season theme “No One is Alone” with a beautiful recognition – one that would lead Fugard to becoming one of the great playwrights of the 20th century.

“As we watch the massive shifts in the world rock the very foundations beneath our feet, we are confronted with a call to action: What am I going to do about all this?” said director Rebecca Haley Clark. “This play forces us to consider three different time periods. 1950. The time period of the play itself, just after the enactment of the system of apartheid in South Africa. 1982. The time period in which the play was written, less than a decade before the official end of apartheid. And 2025. The here. The now. The crossroads. It also forces us to consider space. What does my tiny surfer beach community have to do with a tea shop in Port Elizabeth, South Africa?”

Five Summer and Fall Productions Connected by Theme of “Till Death Do Us Part”; A Christmas Carol Returns for Winter Production August 26, 2025– SANTA CRUZ, CA— Santa Cruz Shakespeare…

Five Summer and Fall Productions Connected by Theme of “Till Death Do Us Part”; A Christmas Carol Returns for Winter Production

August 26, 2025– SANTA CRUZ, CA— Santa Cruz Shakespeare (SCS), celebrating 12 years as a nationally recognized non-profit professional repertory theater company with history in Santa Cruz County going back more than 40 years, has announced its lineup of six productions for its 2026 season, expanding from its 2025 season to include a second fall show. Performances will take place July 12 to Oct. 4 in the Audrey Stanley Grove (The Grove) in Santa Cruz’s DeLaveaga Park, with the holiday production of A Christmas Carol taking place in Nov. and Dec. at the Veteran’s Memorial Hall in downtown Santa Cruz.

The productions of the 2026 season include:

Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare

Macbeth by William Shakespeare

Fences by August Wilson

Private Lives by Noel Coward

The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

“Hot on the heels of our most successful season ever, I am excited to build on our incredible accomplishments and continue the expansion that has made them possible,” said Charles Pasternak, SCS artistic director. “In 2026, we will further expand the fall into with a rotating repertory of two shows, which extends our summer and fall season to five shows. Add to that our production of A Christmas Carol, which will return for a third year in 2026, and we have doubled the number of shows we produce in only three years. It is a miraculous accomplishment, made possible by the enthusiasm and generous support of this incredible community.”

The 2026 Season will also include SCS’s Fringe Series, including two staged readings and two performances of the apprentice show. Titles and dates to be announced later.

The theme for 2026 summer and fall productions is Till Death Do Us Part, in which all productions take a deeper and more intimate look at partnerships and marriage.

About the Summer 2026 Productions:

Much Ado About Nothing

By William Shakespeare

Directed by Charles Pasternak

One of Shakespeare’s wittiest and most beloved comedies, the 2026 season will open with Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Of all the couples in Shakespeare, perhaps none is more widely loved than Beatrice and Benedict. Their battle of wits; their antagonism turned to eroticism; their history. Before the play begins, they already seem to define each other. The audience, like the other characters in the play, wait with excitement as their wits clash, and eventually, as their love blossoms.

Macbeth

By William Shakespeare

Directed by Paul Mullins

Dark, bloody, brutal, and magnificent, Shakespeare’s Macbeth is one of the greatest plays ever written. Its central couple, ironically, is one of Shakespeare’s happiest. At least at the beginning. Where Much Ado shows us the coming together of antagonists, Macbeth explores what we become when our second half is ripped away. A powerful unit, wildly in love with each other, the Macbeths follow the insinuations of the witches – the famous weird sisters – and commit murder in the name of their shared ambition: the throne of Scotland. But even with their goal achieved, Macbeth’s paranoia and guilt lead him further down the road of blood. The central unit tears apart under the shadow of its deeds. Who are these two without each other? Slowly and surely, the play shows us society’s ruin in the form of its leading pair.

Macbeth will star Dan Donahue in the title role and Paige Lindsey White as Lady Macbeth.

Fences

By August Wilson

Directed by Susan Dalian

August Wilson joins the Santa Cruz Shakespeare stage for the first time in 45 years. Fences is the perfect offering, wonderfully in line with the season’s theme: Till Death Do Us Part. Troy Maxson is one of Wilson’s great creations; Shakespearean in scope; a wordsmith and brilliant storyteller. He has survived the terrible trauma of his past and built himself a good life. But the backbone of that life, the spine that keeps it standing strong, is his wife Rose. Like all of Wilson’s best work, Fences is both mythic and intimate; the questions it asks both human and eternal.

Private Lives

By Noel Coward

Directed by Laura Gordon

If you think Beatrice and Benedict go at it in Much Ado, wait until you see Amanda and Elyot. Both on honeymoons with new spouses, having violently divorced years before, Amanda and Elyot discover each other sharing adjoining balconies in the same hotel. Well, one thing leads to another, and… sometimes the line between love and hate is so thin. In Noel Coward’s masterpiece, we witness two selfish, passionate, egotistical, madly in love people drive each other absolutely crazy. How can they possibly survive together? But more importantly, perhaps, how can they survive apart? With Coward’s searing wit, you’ll laugh until you cry while they scream until they kiss. And vice versa.

Private Lives will star Charles Pasternak as Elyot and Paige Lindsey White as Amanda.

The Last Five Years

By Jason Robert Brown

Directed by Laura Gordon

Music Direction by Luke Shepherd

Coming full circle on the theme, Till Death Do Us Part, Brown’s gorgeous musical looks at the beginning and ending of a relationship through the eyes of Cathy and Jamie. In rotating songs, Cathy’s journey moves backward through the relationship, while Jamie’s moves forward. Through beautiful music and clever, moving lyrics, Brown looks deeply at the sacrifices we make, how we come to define each other, and what it costs to let it go.

Tickets go on sale to members in April 2026 and the public on May 1, 2026.

CAST AND PRODUCTION TEAMS

Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine

Opening Night: July 19, 2025, 8 p.m.
Director: Jerry Lee
Music Direction: Luke Shepherd

Starring Charlotte Munson as the Witch, Tyler Nye as the Baker and Melissa WolfKlain as the Baker’s Wife. The ensemble includes: Mai Abe, Jordan Best, Alex Cook, Daniel Harray, Justin Joung, Elliot Sagay, Lori Schulman and Ciarra Stroud.

Production team includes Michael Schweikardt and Bennett Seymour (Scenic Design), Austin Blake Conlee (Costume Design), Marcella Barbeau (Lighting Design) and Barry G. Funderburg (Sound Design).

Director’s Note

“[Into the Woods] fits beautifully in a Shakespeare festival season. It’s rooted in heightened language. Characters soliloquize, wrestle with choices, and engage directly with the audience. Its themes run deep. The questions it raises are timeless. We wanted to craft a piece that felt
organically born of the Grove. That celebrated the natural beauty of this performance space. We decided to set our production in America—Santa Cruz—at the end of the Gilded Age. Our fairy tales feel less like rustic German folklore and more like stories that have journeyed across the ocean, over the Rockies, and settled on the California coast. We wanted these characters to feel rooted in this space, like they grew here. And with one little toe still dipped in antiquity of classic fairy tales.”

A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare

Opening Night: July 18, 2025, 8 p.m.
Director: Paul Mullins

Starring Mike Ryan as Nick Bottom and Justin Joung as Puck. The ensemble includes: Alex Cook, Jono Eiland, Daniel Harray, Corey Jones, Lily Kops, Charlotte Munson, Tyler Nye, Allie Pratt, Kavin Pugazhenthi, ML Roberts, Desiree Rogers, Nick Rossi, Elliot Sagay, Shelby Denise Smith, Ciarra Stroud, Paige Lindsey White, Melissa WolfKlain, Lincoln Best and Joseph Pratt Lukefahr.

Production team includes Michael Schweikardt & Bennett Seymour (Scenic Design), B. Modern (Costume Design), Marcella Barbeau (Lighting Design) and Mackenzie Adamick (Sound Design).

Director’s Note:

“When [A Midsummer Night’s Dream] was published in the Quarto in 1600 the title page states that the play “hath been sundry times publicly acted”. The play has continued to be “sundry times publicly acted” for these past four hundred years. It is the most frequently produced of Shakespeare’s plays. For many it is the first Shakespeare play seen in performance and remains for many their favorite. Midsummer stands among Shakespeare’s greatest plays due to its astonishing blend of imagination, insight into human nature, and timeless theatrical appeal.”

Pericles by William Shakespeare and George Wilkins

Opening Night July 31, 2025, 8 p.m.
Director Charles Pasternak

Starring Paige Lindsey White as Pericles and Allie Pratt as Marina. The ensemble includes: Jono Eiland, Corey Jones, Lily Kops, Kavin Pugazhenthi, ML Roberts, Desiree Rogers, Nick Rossi, Mike Ryan and Shelby Denise Smith.

Production team includes Michael Schweikardt and Bennett Seymour (Scenic Design), Erin Reed Carter (Costume Design), Marcella Barbeau (Lighting Design) and Mackenzie Adamick (Sound Design).

Director’s Note:

“Pericles is one of my favorite plays. It stands powerfully with The Winter’s Tale and Cymbeline as a late triumvirate in Shakespeare’s career in which the traditional lines of comedy and tragedy blur, ambiguity is magnified, forgiveness is paramount, and miracles are possible. We need the stories of Shakespeare’s late plays now more than ever. They’re complicated, wild, sexy, and fierce… they don’t let us off the hook; they don’t let us box up good and evil easily. They ask a lot of us. But their return is great.”

“Master Harold”… and the Boys by Athol Fugard

Opening Night September 5, 2025, 7 p.m.
Director Rebecca Haley Clark

Starring Corey Jones as Sam, Nick Rossi as Haley and Elliot Sagay as Willy.

Production team includes Michael Schweikardt and Bennett Seymour (Scenic Design), B. Modern (Costume Design), Marcella Barbeau (Lighting Design) and Luke Shepherd (Sound Design and Composition).

Director’s Note:

“As we watch the massive shifts in the world rock the very foundations beneath our feet, we are confronted with a call to action: What am I going to do about all this? Working on Master Harold…and the Boys, has further solidified that gnawing question of what would I do if I were in those circumstances, the question that always reveals itself during times of immense change and social upheaval. Who am I really? This play forces us to consider three different time periods.

SCS’s Fringe Series

The 2025 Season includes the Fringe Series, comprised of two staged readings and two performances of its apprentice show, Betrayal by Harold Pinter, happening Tuesday nights in August at 7 p.m. Price is pay-what-you-will.
